How many drones does it take to change a lightbulb? Apparently two and a pack of nine light bulbs.
Youtuber Marek Baczynski shared a video of an attempt at using a drone to replace a light bulb. While the experiment intended to only use one drone, a modified Eachine E30W, the number quickly jumped to two when the first went plummeting to the ground in a failed attempt.
The replacement was a Syma X5C-1 which completed the task in a speedy 10 minutes. With the excruciating suspense measuring up to that of BattleBots, light bulb replacing drones might just be ABC’s next hit show.
Both drones have three prongs extending from the top of their frame. This allows them to grip the light bulb and swap it out when properly aligned. Sadly, the effectiveness of the three-pronged gripper didn’t pan out as planned – most of the light bulbs fell and met an unfortunate end.
Although this might be a single drone successfully removing a single robot, it gives hint to endearing prospects. Could this be the first of many jobs snatched out of the clumsy hands of humans by robots? Probably not, but it sure is a bright idea.
