Compiler is a weekly article that gathers the best stories on robots and drones from the past week. From stories on our blog to other popular sites, here are the week’s best stories you don’t want to miss.
ATLAS Home Robot
Atlas is a $2 million advanced humanoid robot developed by Boston Dynamics. IHMC Robotics, based out of Florida, has developed a rather useful control algorithm to get Atlas to do some mundane household chores. Don’t get your hopes up though, robots have a ways to go before they start sweeping, vacuuming, and picking up trash in your home. Just check out the video above.
Child Development Robot
Development disorders such as autism and down syndrome aren’t curable, but a new robot named Leka could be the treatment of the future. Developed in France by a small startup, Leka is a spherical robot that rolls around and emits a range of emotions through sounds, lights, and movement. It’s not a solid replacement for therapy but rather a tool for “parents and caregivers to teach through play and make therapy easier, more efficient & constant by bringing therapy home.”
Squishy Robot Fingers
It’s 2014. Marine biologist David Gruber is giving a talk on his exploration of deep sea coral reefs and subsequently shows the audience a video of a pair of rigid robotic hands collecting delicate ocean life specimens. Amidst the audience is Harvard engineer and roboticist Robert J. Wood. Wood is somewhat baffled by the use of clunky, overpowered robots collecting such fragile specimens, but an idea clicks with him. How about using soft robots to collect samples of ocean life?
Programmable Consumer Drone
Computer coding, an industry which was once locked to a small, well trained group of people has quickly become more accessible to adults and children alike all over the world. CoDrone is the latest product to take this industry by storm. CoDrone is a small consumer drone that can be programmed to do anything you want. As the company says “it’s part code, and part drone” that means whether you are looking to play some “drone bowling” or program custom flight routes, CoDrone lets you do it.
