When you’ve gotta catch ’em all but you’re too into drones, there’s the Pokédrone. Designed by TRNDlabs, a company that markets faddish consumer gadgets like drones and headphones, the Pokédrone is a micro-sized quadcopter designed to help trainers be the very best with Pokémon Go.
What seems like a hot idea, spoofing a phone’s GPS location so users can catch Pokémon in hard-to-reach locations, may not actually work.
Props to The Verge for bringing these valid points to light. For numerous (and obvious) reasons, the Pokédrone is unlikely to ever take off.
- Selling a product under the name “poké” won’t slide with Nintendo.
- Without jailbreaking or using Apple developer tools, spoofing an iPhone’s GPS location is far fetched.
- Playing the game is about venturing out to physical locations, and using a faked GPS location to do so is probably against Pokémon Go’s terms of service (think of it as cheating).
- Using the drone’s camera feed to substitute as Pokémon Go’s AR mode isn’t possible without jailbreaking.
Furthermore, the drone’s camera is nowhere near the quality of the iPhone’s. Unless you don’t mind blurry video for the Pokémon Go AR mode, I don’t see the Pokédrone boding well for users.
If the drone does turn out to be real, I’ll jump on the boat and order one. Hopefully by then, Niantic updates Pokémon Go with trainer battling and trading. Maybe two Pokédrones could hover midair as each user battles his or her pocket monsters? That would make for some crazy-realistic flying type Pokémon battles.
Simplebotics reached out to TRNDlabs for comments. The company says they are “in discussion with Nintendo and can’t say anything about [it]. We have some obstacles to face before we can bring out the Pokédrone…”
