Compiler is a weekly article that gathers the best stories on robots and drones from the past week. From stories on our blog to other popular sites, here are the week’s best stories you don’t want to miss.
Root Teaches Kids Code
Stemming from the labs of Harvard’s Wyss Institute is Root, a robot designed with the sole purpose of teaching kids the language of today’s digital machines. Researchers at the lab have created Root to be as simple as possible. It works off of a tablet, incorporating a custom programming environment known as Square. Root coupled with Square should engage kids with coding at an early age and retain their interest as the level of coding increases to more elaborate concepts.
DFRobot’s Antbo Makes Coding Cakewalk
Amidst the realm of kid-friendly robots is DFRobot’s newly-launched Antbo. Antbo, which awkwardly merges “ant” and “robot” to sound as one word, is an ant-inspired robotics kit marching to teach kids how to code. Chinese startup DFRobot has had some notable successes in the past, so they’ve launched their Antbo on Indiegogo to raise a few bucks. Well, $50,000.
Zipline Drones Save Lives
Founded by the remaining members of fallen robot startup Romotive, Zipline is a drone delivery startup working to make medical aid accessible in developing countries. The problem is simple by looking at the numbers: the WHO estimates that over 6 million children under the age of five die every year because they lack access to simple and affordable medical interventions. Developing countries around the world have little access to medical intervention due to the hindrance of the lastmile problem. The lastmile problem is the inability to deliver medicine from city to remote area due to lacking transportation, communication, and supply chain infrastructure.
Ziro Hand-Controlled Robot
From Indiegogo:
“Ziro lets you design, build, and animate your robotic inventions, control them easily with the lift of a finger or a flick of the wrist. Made for robotics enthusiasts and creative newbies alike, Ziro is the perfect platform for bringing your 3D creations to life.”
