According to FAA administrator Michael Huerta, more than 180,000 people have registered as drone owners in the newly-established drone registry. The registry went live last year on December 21, and has left drone owners with a free ($5 after January 20), web-based form to legally register their drones. Failing to register a drone by February 19 could result in stiff fines of up to $27,500. 180,000 registrants seems substantial, but the FAA estimates that over 1,000,000 consumer drones were gifted over the holidays. This leaves plenty more to come.

The FAA also announced their B4UFLY app (before you fly) which will enable drone owners to determine if their location has any flight restrictions, plan future flights, and access helpful resources. The app is available for iOS and Android, but Android owners will have to participate in the app’s beta testing if they want to try out the current build. If, for obvious reasons, you question the reliability and privacy of a government-made app, there’s an app I recommend, Hover.
